The organizing commitee is pleased to invite you to attend the 9th International Cherry Symposium (Cherry2021), which will be held from May 20 to 24, 2021, in Beijing City in China.


      Beijing, the capital of the People' s Republic of China, is the country' s political, cultural, international communication, and scientific the technological innovation centre. With a long history and splendid culture, Beijingis one of China's first famous historical and cultural cities, and the city that houses the most world cultural heritage in the world, such as the Forbidden City, Great Wall, Summer Palace, etc.

      Shunyi District, where 9th International Cherry Symposium 2021 will be held, is located in Northeast of Beijing City, 30 km away from downtown. It's the location of Capital International Airport, and one of important cherry production places in Beijing. Over 4,000 ha sweet cherry has been developed in Beijing suburban, which provide tourism and leisure mainly for the city residents.

1. About China
    China, one of the four ancient civilizations in the world, with a long history for more than 5000 years is the world’ s second largest economy, the world’ s largest trading country, the world’ s largest agricultural country, as well as largest total grain producer and also is one of the fastest growing countries in the world. China is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.

     China is located in the East Asia and the West Bank of the Pacific Ocean, with a land area of more than 9.6 million square kilometers and is the third largest country in the world in area and with a sea area of about 3 million square kilometers. China is the largest country in population in the world with a population for about 1.4 billion.

     China is a unified multi-ethnic country composed of 56 ethnic groups with 34 provincial-level administrative regions, in which there are 23 provinces including Taiwan Province, 5 autonomous regions, 4 municipalities directly under the central government and 2 special administrative regions, Hong Kong and Macao. The capital is Beijing.

2. Current situation of cherry industry in China

    (1) Cultivation area, yield and variety of cherry in China

      Chinese cherries (Prunus pseudoceresus) has been cultivated for more than 2500 years in China. Sweet cherries (P. avium), originated from Europe and West Asia, were introduced into China in 1871 and first started plantation in Yantai, Shandong Province. Now they have been generally referred to as ‘cherries’ and have become the main cultivated varieties in China. In just a few decades, China has become the world’ s largest producer and consumer of sweet cherries, with the cherry acreage and import volume ranking first in the world. Sour cherries (P. cerasus) are scattered cultivated and area is very small.


    The cultivation area of cherry in China now is 0.2667 million ha with the total production of 1,700,000 tons, among which 0.2333 million ha of sweet cherry and 13,333 ha of greenhouse sweet cherry. More than 500 germplasm resources were collected and preserved, with 30~50 mainly cultivated varieties, including ‘Hongdeng’, ‘Hongmi’, ‘Крпноплолоная’, ‘Tieton’, ‘Brooks’, ‘Van’, ‘Rainier’, ‘Lapins’, ‘Summit’, ‘Sunburst’, ‘Regina’, etc.. More than 40 new sweet cherry varieties and 10 rootstock varieties have been independently released recently. ‘Hongdeng’ accounts for 40% of the total area of sweet cherry cultivation in China. Rootstocks mainly include Chinese cherry (Prunus pseudoceresus), mountain cherry (P. serrulata), sour cherry (P. cerasus), Mahal (P. mahaleb) and their interspecific hybrids, such as Gisela 6 have better application prospects.

      The main provinces and cities of cherry production in China are Shandong, Shaanxi, Liaoning, Gansu, Beijing, etc.

   (2) Import trade of cherries in China

     China imported 0.186 million tons of cherries from April 2018 to March 2019,  according to the data of the Chinese General Administration of customs, a year-on-year increase of 83%. The total amount of imports reached US $1.29 billion, a year-on-year increase of 68%. The total amount of imports exceeded that of durian, ranking the first in fruit import.

       The main sources of cherry imports in China are from Chile, America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Argentina. The largest source was Chile, with a total import of 0.163 million tons, followed by the America with 14,000 tons, and Canada of 5,000 tons in 2018.

3. The development of cherry industry in Beijing

 (1) About Beijing

    Beijing is the capital of China, the National Center of politics, culture, innovation and international exchanges, with more than 20 million residents, ranking the second large city in population in China. Beijing, which is one of the 'four ancient capitals' in China, has a long history over 3,000 years in its construction and has 850 years of capital history. Beijing has an area of more than 16,000 square kilometers and governs 16 districts. Beijing has a warm temperate and semi-humid continental monsoon climate. The summer is hot and rainy, the winter is cold and dry, with short spring and autumn, and the average annual temperature about 10 to 12 ℃ in Beijing.

  (2) Current status of cherry development in Beijing

      Cherry is one of the most popular fruits in Beijing. By the end of 2019, the total area of cherry cultivation in Beijing is more than 4,000 ha, with a total output of 18,700 tons which values of RMB 427 million. It is one of the most profit industries in the city so there are totally 4,000 people directly engaged in cherry production in Beijing.

      The mainly cultivated varieties are ‘Крпноплолоная’, ‘Hongmi’, ‘Hongyan’, ‘Hongdeng’, ‘Brooks’, ‘Summit’, ‘Van’, ‘Tieton’, ‘Rainier’, ‘Lapins’ and so on. Generally, the maturity period is from mid to late May to late June.

      In future, we will try to achieve a goal of 6,000~7,500 Kg/ ha for open field and 11,250~15,000 Kg/ ha for greenhouse in the cherry industry in Beijing with the new cultivar introduction and new orchard management technology application, including soil improvement, new training system, bird and hail preventions, as well as post harvest commercialization treatments.
